It’s not Halloween…

The Day of the Dead in Mixquic, Mexico / NR

I will not wish you “Happy Halloween” for this weekend, I have never understood why people had adopted this tradition, just under marketing laws from the 90s. Well, I know it is an old celebration coming from the Celts but I consider that the Day of the Dead, celebrated in Mexico and Central America (and also in Brazil under the name Dia dos Finados), is deeper nowadays. It also seems as if it was more preserved from commercial drifts.

El Dia de muertos was already celebrated before the Spanish arrive to America, maybe 3,000 years ago. Now people go to cemeteries to communicate with the soul of the dead. They let them their favorite food and drink. And the event takes a very different look from the Catholic celebration as it is not necessarily a sad day. People laugh, make jokes but at the same time they think about beloved people who are not with them anymore. Just beautiful. So…   ¡ Feliz día de muertos !
