They used to fight for the revolution… Now they fight for their wedding! Abimael Guzman and Elena Iparraguirre could begin a hunger-strike because the Peruvian authorities refuse them to marry. They were two of the most searches revolutionaries in the world before they were arrested together in 1992. Abimael Guzman founded the Shining Path that terrorized Peru during three decades. Bluff and drug stuff
Panic spread over the weekend in the Mexican central city of Cuernavaca (about one hour from Mexico City). An email from a supposed drug gang circulated among the inhabitants and the thousands tourists and students who are used to spend the weekend there. The message recommended people to stay at home because two gangs could have taken the street to fight to death. “We might confuse you with our enemies”, they said. Continue reading

Hocus Mockus
He looks like an old high school teacher. But actually he is much more funny. Antanas Mockus is candidate for the next Colombian presidential election which will take place on the 30th of May. He is not unknown as he was already candidate in 2006 for the Indigenous Social Alliance Movement (he is himself the son of… Lithuanian migrants !), candidate for the vice-presidency in 1998 with the conservative Noemi Sanin and he is the former mayor of Bogota (1995-1996 and 2001-2003). The singer, the president and a “H1J0D3PU7A”
Here is another proof of how Twitter has changed the way people communicate, especially celebrities. And so on, as the story has many dimensions. Colombian singer Juanes worsened the diplomatic crisis between Colombia and Venezuela. The reason: a message he left on his Twitter account. The man who sang “La Camisa negra” made a joke. “They just gave me the PIN code of Hugo Chavez’s cellphone. Do you want it? It is H1J0D3PU7A”. Well, not so funny, it makes me better think about the jokes children make with their calculator. But the fact is that the relationship between Colombia and Venezuela were particularly tight. Thriller president
Imagine Barack Obama, Silvio Berlusconi or Nicolas Sarkozy dancing on Thriller… Well, no big deal, we can imagine it quite easily nowadays ! So it’s just another example of a political show, and a good one : the new president of Chile, the center-right wing candidate and businessman Sebastian Piñera danced in a TV show during his campaign, in a tribute to Michael Jackson. He seems comfortable with the cameras (but not with the dance !) but it is not surprising. He is the owner of several TV channels…

Secretive friends
As Iranian President Ahmadinejad began a South American tour and arrived in Caracas today, the Spanish newspaper El Pais wondered what the flight between Caracas, Damascus and Tehran is. At least a weird strategy from the Venezuelan state company Conviasa, which confessed it was an economical nonsense. The airline only serves seven international destinations including neighbors Port of Spain, Saint Vincent, Grenada or Dominica. Continue reading

Couldn’t we send Cristiano Ronaldo to El Salvador ?
El Salvador has been hit by hurricane Ida. More than 130 people have been killed, thousands of bridges and roads have been destroyed, houses must be built again and 10.000 people would need an emergency food supply… Experts evaluate the cost of reconstruction about 80 million dollars. It could seem not so much if we compare to other natural disasters like the 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia. Continue reading

Jeffrey in the sky with diamonds
What happened with Jeffrey Max Jones ? The Mexican Assistant Secretary of Agriculture took the drug dealers as a model during a speech! “Farmers should follow the example of drug traffickers because they produce what the market demands”, he said. As if it was not clear enough, he added : “If somebody knows about market laws nowadays, drug dealers do.” As he realized he was saying something ambiguous, he thought it was necessary to precise: Continue reading
