What happens right now in South America ? It seems that all the continent has been taken by a wave of spy stories. First of all, Venezuela had accused Colombia from having sent some spied in their territory. Several people have been arrested and the case almost led both countries to a conflict as Chavez mobilized his army to the border.
But another diplomatic case occurred immediately between Peru and Chile. Peru accused two Chilean military officials from spying. Lima said that an air force official had confessed to passing national security secrets to Chile. Those accusations have been denied by Chile. Both countries have been competing for several years on issues of border and fishing.
Last but not least: Argentina discovered its own Watergate. The Buenos Aires police is involved in a huge scandal and accused from having wiretapped several politicians including President Cristina Kirchner and her husband, ex President Nestor Kirchner. The Prime Minister asked the mayor of Buenos Aires Mauricio Macri to resign.
