A “safe” border

Demonstrators damage part of the U.S. border fence, during a protest along a section of the fence between Mexico and the U.S., on the outskirts of Ciudad Juarez June 12, 2010. The protest was against a June 7, 2010 incident, when a U.S. border patrol agent shot dead a teenage boy near the border after a group of migrants threw rocks at U.S. officials. A FBI report released a few weeks ago revealed that the US-Mexican border was one of the safest areas in America. 3 percent of the border patrol agents were assaulted last year in the cities along the border. It is the lowest rate in 7 years and far less than on other regions. US authorities were pleased and enjoyed that good news, but is it really a good one?

There is no doubt that the US side of the border is safer than the Mexican one. The Mexican drug lords know it: many of them cross the border to feel safe when their business becomes out of control in Mexico and give their orders from the US. In some way, it has turned into a rear base.

But the cooperation between both sides of the border is far less efficient. The problem will be over when there is a real cooperation policy. If we consider that a large majority of the weapons in Mexico come from the USA, we cannot be satisfied by this statistics. Hillary Clinton herself had declared a few months ago that 90% of the weapons in Mexico came from the US. Fox News (lol) had led a crusade against that number saying that “only 17 percent of guns found at Mexican crime scenes have been traced to the U.S” and weapons from Central America, Russia or China were more. They only forgot that not all the weapons in the US are produced there and that some weapons are never found. Be sure it is far more than a 17%… So can we say the border is really safe?…
