On Saturday, Mexico validated its ticket for the World Cup 2010, beating El Salvador 4-1 in the Azteca Stadium. A great joy for a team that was nearly eliminated a few months ago. Saturday night in Mexico City, 10.30 pm : the police begins an operation in order to take control of all the offices of Luz y Fuerza del Centro, the monopolistic company that delivers electricity to all the inhabitants of the Mexican capital city and the surrounding region.

The company had been declared in a situation of bankruptcy before and the federal government officialised the closing of the state-run company on Sunday. The Saturday night operation was to prevent a blocking and sabotage from the workers. The daily newspaper El Universal reports that the police officers told the workers that intervening during the football celebrations was the only way for them to succeed.

When they knew police was taking their offices, many electricians came immediately… With Mexico football shirts and some of them with a huge alcohol breath ! For the moment another state-operated company, the Federal Electricity Commission that provides electricity for most of the country, will take over. But a question remains… What if Mexico did not win its game on Saturday?!
